Osan prepares for intramural football playoffs

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- As Osan heads into its 10th week of intramural flag football, a competitive regular season is winding down leading into this year's play offs.

"This has been an all around tough season," said Staff Sgt. William Jackson, the base intramural sports director. "We have had several problems with rain and some safety issues with the playing fields, but as long as we don't get more rain, the season should be over by around Dec. 6."

He said mother nature isn't the only thing making the season difficult this year - all of the teams have being giving each other very stiff competition.

"Up through week eight, we had four undefeated teams and even then there was a very close race with more than half the teams."

As of this week, the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron is the only undefeated team. The 607th Air and Space Communications Squadron managed a surprise upset of the 51st Medical Group during week 9, beating them 22-21. The other two teams that held undefeated positions through more than half the season were the 51st Mission Support Squadron and 51st Logistics Readiness Squadron #2.

Weather permitting, play-off games should start Dec. 4 in a double elimination format, with the championship game taking place Dec. 6.

Out of the 24 teams that started the season, only eight will enter into the playoffs. Since flag football is the last intramural sport played during the year, the Commander's Trophy will also be awarded after the football champions are crowned. Right now, the 303rd Intilligence Squadron is in the lead for large units and 607th Air Intelligence Squadron is leading for small units.
