AFAF underway at Osan

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  When Airmen and their families are in need, there are many avenues available to see them through difficult times.

One such program is the Air Force Assistance Fund, which was established to provide for an annual effort to raise funds for the charitable affiliates that provide support to the Air Force family. These organizations are the Air Force Villages, Inc., the Air Force Aid Society, Inc., the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, and the Air Force Enlisted Village, Inc. These organizations help the Air Force family with aid in an emergency, with educational needs, or to have a secure retirement home for widows or widowers of Air Force members in need of financial assistance.

The Air Force Assistance Fund kicked off here March 29 and runs through May 7.

Last year there were $139,779 in contributions from Team Osan out of which $98,200 went back to Airmen and the agencies and programs supporting them and their families. Grants and loans from these funds went toward such simple activities as helping to pay phone bills, schools expenses and bundles for babies. The largest impact was seen by 34 members who received $35,269 in emergency travel funds.

Maj. Christine Kress, base project officer, said she is counting on the giving nature of Team Osan to come together once again to meet the 2011 goal of $98,070.

"We've seen time and time again how much this base pulls together to accomplish the mission or task at hand," she said. "We have no reason to believe this campaign should be any different."
