From planting trees and flowers to pledging to recycle more, children and staff members of Osan Elementary School and Osan community members from around the base dedicated time to help observe Earth Day this year.

More than 60 students from Osan American Schools competed in an Earth Day poster contest that highlighted climate change, elementary students planted trees and flowers and people from around the base made contributions to the Earth Day Pledge Tree by writing down promises to the Earth like "I will turn off the water when brushing my teeth."

Earth Day, held every year on April 22, was founded in 1970 and has become an annual day for people from around the world to demonstrate responsible environmental decisions such as pollution prevention, recycling and energy conservation.

Mr. Kwon, Song Kun, a physical scientist with the 51st Civil Engineer Squadron, said it's important for Airmen and their families to recognize Earth Day because it's a day that reminds us the importance of the environment and things like pollution prevention, recycling and minimizing waste output.

Also, until April 26, the 51st CES environmental office will be hosting the first annual household hazardous waste collection.

"To avoid improper disposal of hazardous materials we will be holding a collection of hazardous waste at Bldg. 833," said Joon Choi, 51st CES environmental program manager. "We are collecting things such as household cleaners and detergents, paints, solvents, motor oil, batteries, and basically anything that you think might be harmful to the environment."

For more information on the household hazardous waste collection or any type of environmental questions, please contact the 51st CES environmental office at 784‐4272 or 031‐661‐4272.
