OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --
Members of Team Osan participated in an Alpha Warrior Battle Rig instructional course here led by Alpha Warrior coaches Sept. 10, 2018.
The program is designed to enhance functional fitness training while incorporating the four pillars of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness: physical, spiritual, mental and social.
“It’s an approach to functional fitness that doesn’t just test you physically and how much you can move your body around, it also tests cognitive strength,” said Jonathan Zananiri, Alpha Warrior tour manager.
“With its cognitive function, the program also revisits teamwork. It’s not just about going in the gym with your headphones in and doing your own thing, it’s about working out with your fellow Airmen, people that you serve alongside, and encouraging each other.”
The two-day course included battle rig familiarization, how to coach others on the battle rig, and how to use the battle rig with proper safety measures.
“The coaches take all of the members through the acclimation process of the Osprey battle tab, a workout that incorporates the rig and fitness movement maneuvers on the outside,” said Zananiri. “They also teach them the aspects of teamwork and how to lead a team in a big setting with multiple people working at the same time.”
During the two-hour Osprey workout training, approximately 30 trainees performed warm-up and cool-down exercises, grip and hand strength movements, proper coaching and motivation techniques, and two rounds of the Osprey workout.
“It’s definitely been tough but it’s been a lot of fun,” said Airman 1st Class Ayana James, 51st Force Support Squadron fitness center specialist. “Everyone so far seems to be enjoying this and I think it’s great how we are encouraging each other. This course is really great for boosting morale.”
Upon completion of training, participants become certified coaches and are able to train others to perform various workouts while using the battle rig as a new form of physical activity.
