Osan Company Grade Officer Council Visits ROKAF Squadron Officer School in Daejon

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  The Republic of Korea Air Force Squadron Officer School, located in Daejon, Republic of Korea, invited 12 United States Air Force company grade officers to participate in bilateral English speech seminar on Jan. 17. Their SOS is four weeks long, compared to the United States Air Force's eight-week program.

During the second week, officers were required to give a general officer-level speech in English. The speech subjects consisted of the following: intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, Pardo's Push, ROKAF's next generation fighter acquisition, unmanned aerial vehicles and aerial refueling. U.S. Air Force CGO's were placed in five seminar groups with approximately 10 ROKAF captains.

Officers listened to and critiqued three speeches presented by three officers. In a combined effort, both ROKAF and U.S. Air Force officers selected the best brief from their seminar. All the officers worked together to fine tune and improve the briefers speech and presentation slides. After selecting the best brief from their seminar, the Korean officers hosted a lunch for the U.S. Air Force officers. Over a traditional Korean lunch, officers from both countries were able to ask more questions about their counterpart's family, hobbies and interests while discovering more common ground.

After lunch, five briefers progressed to the final round and presented their briefs to the entire ROKAF class and U.S. Air Force CGOs. Lt. Col. Mun Lee, U.S. Air Force Military Exchange Officer for ROK, and the U.S. officers listened to and graded each presentation. At the end of each speech, the briefers were asked a couple questions and received feedback. The winner was presented a gift from Lt. Col. Lee. As a token of their friendship and appreciation, the Korean school house general presented gifts to the U.S. officers as well. Each officer was presented a coin and individualized framed picture with the ROKAF seminar members.

The ROKAF officers are stationed at bases throughout the peninsula, including Osan Air Base.
