Osan leaders get firsthand look at 51st FW mission

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  More than 70 senior leaders took a deeper look into the 51st Fighter Wing mission during a Mustang immersion tour Sept. 25, 2012.

Group commanders, squadron commanders, chief master sergeants and first sergeants took a day-long tour at the invitation of Col. Patrick McKenzie, 51st FW commander, to get hands-on and understand what Osan Airmen accomplish every day.

"We saw the incredible work that everyone does across the base that doesn't get seen every day by leadership," McKenzie said. "This immersion helped us have a better understanding of how everyone contributes to the overall mission of the wing.

"It's remarkable to see firsthand how dedicated our Mustang Airmen are," he added.

During the tour, leaders helped simulate save a life with a human-body simulator called "Meti-Man," flew in a flight simulator and watched a quick reaction team demonstration to help them through a "shoot or no shoot" simulation. They also helped put out fires with the base fire department and and learned how to put together a munition.

"The idea behind the leadership immersion tour was to get our leadership out there and get hand's on with different jobs," said Capt. Elizabeth Hoeltje, 51st Force Support Squadron sustainment services flight commander and planner for the tour. "This gives them a better understanding for what the Airmen go through on a day-to-day basis. They were able to talk to the Airmen and really gain an appreciation by experiencing what they do."
