CE focuses on Osan parks, recreation areas Published Aug. 26, 2011 By Tech. Sgt. Eric Petosky 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- In response to concerns voiced during a town hall meeting Aug. 10, the 51st Civil Engineer Squadron is focusing attention on improving three parks and recreation areas here. The playgrounds near the old Mustang Valley Village and Hallasan tower, as well as the recreation area near the base softball fields, are the three areas of concern. The Mustang Valley Village playground renovation is the largest project. The playground was closed during the demolition of the buildings surrounding it and was not maintained. The demolition contractors returned the area to the base Aug. 10. According to Maj. Wayne Kinsel, 51st CES Programs Flight commander, engineers drafted a $145,000 plan to install a new playground, swings, rubber matting, fencing and drainage. The basketball court will also be repaired and repainted as part of the plan. The plan is included on the 51st Fighter Wing Integrated Priority List for unfunded projects and must compete with other base requirements. Currently, there is no start date for the Mustang Valley Village playground renovation. Contractors will begin installation of better drainage infrastructure and rubber matting on the surface of the Hallasan Tower playground Sept. 19, and work should be completed by Oct. 7. Presently, the playground sits on grass, which turns into mud quickly during the rainy season. Rubber matting allows families to use the playground without the mess. The recreation area near the softball fields has been cleared of insects by the 51st CES entomology team, according to Maj. Gary Moore, 51st CES Operations Flight commander. Entomology Airmen will continue to assess this area on a weekly basis to prevent insect infestations in the future. While these initiatives are in response to town hall meeting concerns, base residents can call CE Customer Service at 784-6226 to report infrastructure related issues.
