On a frigid winter morning Jan. 21, 250 members of the 51st Logistics Readiness Squadron here could be seen traveling the base in Mission Oriented Protection Posture 4 to prepare for the following week's operational readiness exercise.

Following an evaluation and assessment of their ability to meet the 51st Fighter Wing's recall response goal, 51st LRS tested their ability to effectively transition through a chemically contaminated environment.

Chief Master Sergeant Daniel McGuire, 51st LRS superintendent, said the goal was met with time to spare.

"We tested the ability of all five of our flight leadership to ensure all personnel reported with 100 percent of their required equipment and had full knowledge of its use and serviceability," Chief McGuire said. "The next step was to successfully facilitate the movement of personnel to a designated rally point."

Through exercise "Battle Staff Directives," 51st LRS Unit Control Center directed personnel to transition through a "contaminated" zone to a second rally point.

"At this point, our evaluation teams ensured personnel were assessed on proper knowledge and use of their equipment, as well as ensuring they donned it properly," Chief McGuire said.

Personnel also utilized "shuffle boxes," a set of tubs containing a mix of bleach and water, used to decontaminate chemical protective overboots.

Once they finally entered the rally point at the base theater, personnel were divided into groups and tested on various subjects in the "Ability to Survive and Operate" section from the Airman's Manual.

"We had them work in groups so the seasoned personnel could help the new arrivals," said Chief McGuire. "This was a great time filler and created a lot of questions that were socialized later in the Q&A portion of the commanders call; time very well spent."

The last learning objective was a complete on-stage skit detailing the requirements when processing through a Contamination Control Area, followed by a Combat Commander's Call.

Staff Sergeant Vanessa Candia, a personal property specialist with 51st LRS, said the event prepared her better for her first exercise at Osan.

"The Combat Commander's Call gave me insight into some of the processes
involved in an exercise," she said. "I had never been involved in an exercise here at Osan and had no idea what to expect prior to this event. I felt like it better prepared me for the upcoming exercise."
