Airmen get out with Outdoor Rec

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  With the summer season finally underway, Airmen will be looking for fun and exciting activities to enjoy themselves outside of their usual day-to-day work week. Fortunately, they won't have to look far thanks to the Outdoor Recreation Center here.

The Outdoor Recreation Center offers everything from scuba diving, paragliding and sky diving, to fishing, hiking and camping. Ranging from adrenaline pumping activities to quiet escapes by the beach, there is something for everyone at minimal cost.

"Our Airmen are so busy with the mission, and all they want to do on the weekends or on their days off is relax--that's why we are here," said Jason Barreuther, 51st Force Support Squadron ODR and Information, Tickets and Travel manager. "Our goal is to make (traveling) as affordable and simple as possible. We make it so they don't have to try and plan these trips on their own, or worry about the language barrier or paying for transportation. They just come in and we're going."

Several activities are scheduled for June, to include indoor ski and snowboarding, all-terrain vehicle riding, deep-sea fishing, bungee jumping, zip-lining and Daecheon Beach camping. Customized trips are also available any day of the week.

"Some people don't have weekends off," Barreuther said. "If they have a group of 10 to 15 people and want to do something, we can schedule a program for them and customize it for a day and time that works best. We are here to serve, so whatever they need, we can make it happen."

ODR also has an open paintball field. Enthusiasts can play Tuesday through Friday between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ODR encompasses several other programs as well, to include the Defender and Mustang pools and pavilions, equipment rentals, and the pet lodge.

"We have a lot of equipment, to include tents, camping supplies, tables, chairs, paintball equipment, grills and bike rentals," said Hong, June Young, 51st FSS ODR program manager. "Anything you need for outdoor activities we have and it's inexpensive."

Airmen can also use their PLAYpass to curve the costs of ODR trips as well. The card, valued at more than $500, offers free or reduced costs on social, recreational, fitness and learning programs and classes to Single Airmen here. Single Airmen for the program is defined as any enlisted member or officer who has no dependents. Airmen eligible for the pass must be on temporary duty for more than 30 days, or deployed for 365 days in support of an active operation and documented on official orders.
