Red Ribbon Week to be observed Oct. 23-31 Published Oct. 12, 2010 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Team Osan will observe Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31. The red ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and community, and no use of illegal drugs and no illegal use of legal drugs. The observance began after the kidnapping, torture and brutal murder of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985, following his four-year undercover operation that led to the discovery of a multimillion dollar narcotics manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico. This illegal drug trafficking operation and others like it were eliminated due to the efforts of Agent Camarena. Today, Red Ribbon Week brings together millions of people to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. Along with Osan, Camp Humphreys will hold events, including the "Save a Life Tour," Oct. 20-22, a driving simulator that gives participants a completely realistic, sober perspective on the effects of driving while intoxicated.
