Newcomers to the 51st Logistics Readiness Squadron and Osan recently had the opportunity to take part in pre-Operational Readiness Exercise training to make sure they are prepared when the first alarm sounds.

With the November ORE just around the corner, the squadron commander thought it would be smart to provide new members with the tools needed to be successful during the exercise, said Master Sgt. Casey Chapman, readiness section chief.

Experienced volunteers lead the initiative, providing peer-to-peer training in self aid and buddy care, ability to survive and operate procedures, post-attack reconnaissance sweeps and unexploded ordinance procedures.

"This training is both unique and helpful because they [the trainees] are training in the actual area they will be working in and will be more familiar with the environment," said Senior Airman Melanie McBride, 51st LRS.

Airman McBride, who has been through seven Osan exercises and volunteered as a PAR sweep and UXO trainer, said this new style of training is definitely setting attendees up for success.

"This gives them a better idea of exactly where they need to go, what they need to look for and what they need to do during exercises here," she said.

Another unique element the squadron training offered was a smaller class size.

"The smaller class definitely works to the benefit of the new guys because one-on-one training is easier to absorb and nothing beats having the hands-on knowledge," Staff Sgt. Keola Soon, a compliance and analysis technician. "When it comes to the actual situations they will have basic experience and I think because of that we will have fewer mistakes."
