Red Ribbon Week observed at Osan Air Base Published Oct. 18, 2009 By Tech. Sgt. Sheri Kangas 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea -- Red Ribbon Week is being observed at Osan Air Base Oct. 23-30. The goals of the annual observance are to promote healthy lifestyles and heighten awareness of substance abuse issues. "We try to impart drug prevention tips to the younger children, mainly kindergarten and middle school," said Mr. Andre Johnson, 51st Fighter Wing Drug Demand Reduction program manager. "By the time children reach high school age, they are most likely already aware of the dangers of drugs." Mr. Johnson added that although they target the younger children, Red Ribbon Week is an observance for everyone. "We want the entire Osan community to be aware of the dangers of drugs, from young children to Airmen of all ages. The more you know, the more you are likely to stay away from illegal drugs." DDR has planned a variety of events to promote Red Ribbon Week, most of which are taking place at the Osan American Middle School. "We will definitely be busy get the word out," Mr. Johnson said. Events at the school include an essay contest, door decorating contest, spirit week which includes a crazy hat day, crazy sock day, and pajama day. There will also be briefings at health classes and a parade. "We also have plenty of red ribbons to give out," Mr. Johnson said. "The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and community. No use of illegal drugs and no illegal use of legal drugs." DDR will also have drug information booths at the Army and Air Force Exchange and ribbon giveaways and incentive items during Newcomer's Orientation and base entry points. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Although the start end dates can vary slightly depending on the organization and source, Red Ribbon Week generally takes place the last full week in October, with the weekends before and following the last full week included as appropriate celebration dates. Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.
