Message from 7th AF commander: New curfew, driving polices

7th AF warriors,

Recently, General Walter L. Sharp, USFK commander, implemented changes regarding two USFK policies -- curfew and driving privileges.

Both policies are effective as of Aug. 15. First, I fully support these new changes. As such, we have published two new 7th AF policy letters that mirror General Sharp's guidance.

Curfew policies are put in effect for two purposes.

First, they help protect our servicemembers, family members and civilian personnel. Second, they reduce the potential for off-base misconduct, mostly due to alcohol-related incidents.

It is imperative all of us understand the consequences of inappropriate behavior when off-base. Korean culture believes the acts of each individual reflect on the character of all; thus, the acts of one or two can affect the overall strength of the ROK-U.S. alliance.

For this new policy to succeed, leaders and supervisors at all levels will need to continually educate their personnel and stress a "Culture of Responsible Choices."

Moreover, I expect servicemembers under my command to adhere to our core values and to act in a disciplined manner. We will neither accept nor tolerate anything less.

Finally, we will continually review this policy and determine whether we are fulfilling our responsibilities as Airmen.

Like the curfew policy, the change in driving privileges will improve the quality of life for our personnel. Specifically, all servicemembers regardless of rank are now eligible to apply for a USFK driver's license.

In addition, servicemembers in the grade of E-7 and above and all command-sponsored personnel may own and register a POV with USFK.

As we strive to create a more normalized tour model that aligns with our bases in Europe and Japan, I firmly believe these policy changes make sense and the timing to implement them is now.

Furthermore, if we act responsibly in our actions, these new policy changes should be transparent to the local communities.

Please keep in mind that our relationship with local communities and our ROKAF counterparts is stronger than ever, in no small measure because of you.
Being good neighbors and conducting ourselves appropriately at all times is the first step and the most important step to ensuring these relationships continue to grow stronger every day.

Thank you for all you do to protect our nation and ensure our high standards are upheld at all times. I am honored to serve with you.
