Happy Mother's Day Published May 9, 2008 OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. What has since become a national holiday and observance originally began in 1907, when Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, wanted to commemorate the anniversary of her mother's death. Ms. Jarvis Mother's Day observance consisted of a small, private church service where she handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, because they represented sweetness, purity, and patience. The first official recognition of the holiday was by West Virginia in 1910. On May 14, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Below are selected Mother's Day messages: -- Mommy, please get well and come home soon. We love you and miss you. Happy Mother's Day!
