MEO ensures fair treatment for all Published June 12, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Jason Epley 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The nation was founded on the principal that all men are created equal and commanders have a tool to help uphold this truth: the Military Equal Opportunity office. MEO provides support to Osan's personnel in the area of equal opportunity, as well as services for military families and retired military. They can provide advice when it comes to Air Force policies and the rights people have within the Department of Defense. They can also help people file sexual harassment or unlawful discrimination complaints. However, MEO does not administer corrective actions. "MEO is not a policing agency; we asses a unit's human relations climate and commander's make the decision," said Master Sgt. Matthew Trower, MEO superintendent. "People should not fear repercussion for filing unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment complaints. We are covered under the Inspector General's Whistle Blowers Protection policy, which provides protection for communications under acts of reprisal." This means people can file complaints without having to worry about harmful repercussions, said Sergeant Trower. Even though MEO is not out to "get" anyone, there are some misconceptions about MEO. "People feel uncomfortable around MEO and worry about everything they say," said Sergeant Trower. "If you're worried about what you're saying in front of us then your probably saying things normally that shouldn't be said. "We're not out to ruin people's jobs, we just want everyone to have a good environment to work in, and to be treated fairly," he added. Osan members can walk in between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. "We work twenty four hours a day, seven days a week; you can ask us questions while we're in uniform or in civilian clothes," said Sergeant Trower.
