Team Osan builds resiliency through competition

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  The 51st Operations Support Squadron combined with the 51st Operations Group to become the overall champions of the second annual Osan Cup, a multi-event competition held here, Sept. 29-30, 2015.

The winners of the other three categories were: small unit- the 51st Fighter Wing Staff Agencies; medium unit- the 51st Operations Support Squadron/Operations Group; and large unit- the 51st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron/25th and 36th Fighter Squadrons/51st Maintenance Group.

The two-day competition consisted of 19 different events centered primarily around traditional sports like basketball, soccer and softball, but also included challenges such as darts, Texas Hold 'em, bowling and even a Korean War trivia contest.

Every event had squadrons and service members facing off against each other in a battle royal to determine who had the most skill, strength, endurance and knowledge to earn them the title of champions of Osan.

"We all know that at Osan, you can get stuck in a rut," said Staff Sgt. Magda 'Maggie D.' Delarosa, 731st Air Mobility Squadron. "When you get to have a break like this it refreshes your mind and rebuilds that resiliency of spirit that gets you through the day. Also, who doesn't like a few days to hang out with people you like?"

Members of Team Osan from the lowest ranking Airman and Soldiers to Mustang 1 himself got in on the action.

"The Osan cup is about the spirit of competition," said Col. Andrew Hansen, 51st Fighter Wing commander. "It's about resiliency and tradition."  He added that the sportsmanship, tenacity and teamwork displayed by the competing Airmen and Soldiers stayed true to the spirit of resiliency.

With the closing ceremony over, the trophies and medals for the individual events passed out to each winning team, the base came together to return to the mission, knowing that friendly rivalries aside, Osan is one team, one fight.
