Members of Osan Air Base paddled through class II and III river rapids Aug. 23, 2014, as they journeyed down the Naerincheon River in Inje-gun, Gangwon-do Province.

The Naerincheon River flows down the mountainside twisting and turning around rocks and river bends until emptying into the Hangang River. The water in the stream ricochets off stones and creates a combination of high, rough rapids and smooth, gentle currents.

"The section of the river was perfect for a rafting experience since each successive area of rapids seemed to increase in intensity until the waves were well over the height of anyone in the raft," said Senior Airman Peter McMurray, 5th Reconnaissance Squadron crew chief.

The river stretches over 6 kilometers from Wondaegyo to the Gosari Resting Spot. Its narrow width and pointed rocks offer an exciting and challenging rafting experience.

"I enjoyed working in unison with everyone in the raft to power through the rapids," McMurray said. "Having a lot of people on the trip made for a more enjoyable overall experience."

Rafts seat as many as nine people, and basic paddling maneuvers are taught to first time rafters. For safety, participants are required to wear a helmet and a life vest.

"I think this is a great experience for anyone," said Senior Airman Elizabeth Heaton, 51st Comptroller Squadron customer service technician. "My favorite part of the trip was splashing people in the other rafts, and watching other raft member's jump into the icy water."

The Outdoor Recreation office provides multiple trips each month for service members to enjoy. Below is a link for different trips Outdoor Recreation has to offer.
