Osan recognizes Earth Day

Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea --  Members of Team Osan weren't afraid to get their hands dirty April 22 for the 44th annual Earth Day.

From planting flowers and trees to pledging to recycle more, this year's events also included pledges to ride bikes and cut down on energy was and pollution.

Earth Day - recognized in more than 192 countries - was founded in 1970 and has become an annual opportunity for people to demonstrate responsible environmental decisions such as pollution prevention, recycling and energy conservation.

"Earth Day raises awareness in the local community about environmental issues and educates people on how to make our cities greener," said Yu Jin Lee, 51st Civil Engineer Squadron environmental office solid waste and recycling manager. "Small, positive actions such as using reusable bags and proper disposal of household hazardous waste can make a great impact for our environment to become healthier."

Students from the Osan Elementary and Middle Schools drew posters that demonstrate their interest in energy conservation. The Earth Day committee also distributed approximately 300 reusable shopping bags to encourage Osan members to use it instead of plastic bags.

"We hope this event will help people foster a greater environmental awareness and make them participate to sustain environmental protection at Osan," Lee said. "We also want people to keep in mind that every day is Earth Day and the planet will benefit from every positive action they take."

Lt. Col. Jack Wheeldon, 51st CES commander, appreciates those who were involved in making Earth Day a success.

"I am very proud of those who made contributions and pledges for Earth Day," he said.
"Those people who helped and promoted being good stewards of our environment have helped make our general populous aware of what this day is for."
