While many Airmen during the winter are trying to find ways to stay warm a select few will be training and preparing for the March 20, 2012 Seoul Marathon.

The marathon is the largest fundraiser for the Knights of Heroes Foundation, which raises money for a camp held annually in Colorado. The camp provides a week-long character building experience for children who have lost their father as a result of military service.

"Last year we had 60 runners from Osan and Kunsan Air Bases raise $36,000 for the foundation," said Lt. Col. Steven Harrold, Osan Seoul Marathon coordinator. "This year we hope to have 100 runners and raise $50,000."

Group training for the marathon begins Nov. 28, but the registration deadline is Dec. 3.

The 16-week training program for the marathon is designed to transform the most basic runner into a marathon runner, Harrold said. If the training plan is followed anyone can finish the run, he said.

"It doesn't take a highly trained athlete to volunteer for this year's Seoul Marathon, just an individual that is dedicated to helping others," said Master Sgt. Andrew Morrison, previous Seoul Marathon runner. "Regardless if you plan to run the half or full marathon, a few hours of aches and pains are nothing compared to the emptiness felt by the youth of our fallen heroes."

Registration for the marathon is $100, which includes entry fees, T-shirt and transportation to and from the event.
