Job title: Aircrew Flight Equipment Journeyman

Job description and its impact on the overall mission: I am a fighter pilot's best friend on his worst day.  My job as an AFE Journeyman involves fitting, inspecting, maintaining, and upgrading critical aviation equipment such as heads-up display helmets, night vision goggles, pilot rescue and survival components, anti-G suits, recovery harnesses, and specialized aircrew chem defense equipment.  Due to the intended use of this equipment, there is no margin for error on my part.  Everything must function exactly as advertised, because there is no backup plan.  After I am finished with my inspections, my 7-level flight mates are there to provide the final set of eyes to make sure everything is ready and reliable. This is how we promote the Commander's vision of Realistic and Robust readiness. Together, we ensure the 51st Fighter Wing pilots are ready to fight, and survive, tonight!

Why did you join the military? I come from a military family.  My father was a crew chief in the 36 FS on F-4 Phantoms, and my mom served as a medic.  Since my job here is in direct support of the 36 FS, it feels great to be following in my family's footsteps.  Having educational benefits is a plus, too! 

Where do you see yourself in 10 or 20 years? My goal is to someday become a Chief Master Sergeant and be stationed overseas.  I'd really like to be able to contribute to my career field as a MAJCOM Functional Manager.

What's your favorite Air Force memory or story?  On a deployment to Qatar, I got the opportunity to receive a C-17 incentive flight and got lots of aerial photos.  Also, I was amazed to witness a real-world med-evac taking place.  I think those medics saved that Soldier's life that day!

What accomplishment are you most proud of?  I was privileged to represent my fellow Airmen as a Ceremonial Guardsman at my last base.  The Honor Guard taught me a lot about military citizenship and Air Force traditions.  It's something I will always remember.
