National Police Week, May 13-17, kicked off with a retreat ceremony in front of Bldg. 1097 to honor fallen defenders and Office of Special Investigations agents May 13.

After names were read, retreat was played and 51st Security Forces Airmen rendered a 21-gun salute, followed by closing remarks from Col. Sean DeWitt, 51st Fighter Wing vice commander.

"This afternoon we hold a retreat to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, our Allies, our cherished freedoms, values and way of life," he said. "Each served a cause greater than themselves and put their dedication to duty above their own personal safety. They are forever bound together by an unbreakable bond of valor. They each gave, as Lincoln said, the 'last full measure of devotion' to the country we love so dearly. For that, we are forever grateful."

The annual week-long observance is held to honor the memory and sacrifices made by individuals in the security forces and OSI career fields, as well as highlight some of the skills and capabilities of the units here.

"Police week is important because it's the time that we set aside to remember why we do what we do as defenders," said Staff Sgt. David Wessell, 51st SFS wartime planning and base defense non-commissioned officer. "Being a security forces member is a privilege because we have such high expectations and have an obligation to reach out, help and protect the installation or individuals every day. Police week allows us to showcase the history of the badge we wear, honor those who've worn it before us and will carry on the legacy in the future."

Events for National Police Week include:
· SF demonstrations and displays - May 15, 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Base Exchange parking lot
· Quick Reaction Team demonstrations - May 15, 4:30 p.m. at the Community Bank in the Base Exchange
