Spring in Korea brings moderate temperatures, and is an excellent time for everyone stationed on the peninsula to get out and experience the land of the morning calm. The 51st Civil Engineer Squadron is taking advantage of this season for the benefit of energy conservation, while preparing the mechanical systems for summer comfort cooling operations.

Last week's moderate temperatures here provided an opportunity to begin shutting down the heating systems. Following completion of the heat turn-off, the base will be in the period of "no-heat/no-cool." Normally this period lasts about six weeks and allows the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning shop to perform seasonal changeover. During this time, HVAC technicians isolate heating systems and execute required maintenance to prepare air conditioning systems for summer operations.

Based on the facility operations guide, HVAC systems used for comfort cooling will be turned on after May 15, when daily high temperatures are above 80 degrees Fahrenheit for five consecutive days. Historically, Osan meets these criteria near the end of May or the first week of June.

We ask our customers to be patient as we enter the period of "no-heat/no-cool." Since the temperature swings significantly during this period, people may experience some uncomfortable conditions. Open windows and use fans until directions are given to turn on comfort cooling systems. Once given direction for A/C turn-on, it will take 14 days to get all base air conditioning systems operational.
