New program gives servicemembers, families another person to talk too Published Nov. 25, 2008 By The Airman and Family Readiness Center 51st Mission Support Squadron OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The Department of Defense has funded a valuable service and Osan is using it. The Military Family Life Consultant program offers short-term, situational, non-medical counseling to servicemembers and their families. The focuses of the program is to empower servicemembers and their families by suggesting positive educational solutions that will assist to lessen the unique stressors of today's military life. The program originated with the Army in 2004 and has expanded to the Air Force and other branches. The MFLC program supplements existing programs and services on base and will refer customers to other resources on base is needed. Consultants do not see anyone who has an open case in the Air Force system. The services provided are private and anonymous; however, MFLCs are mandated reporters of child abuse, domestic abuse and duty to warn situations. The MFLC is housed in the Airman and Family Readiness Center, but is not part of the center. MFLC also do outreach and can meet with people outside of the office if customers are more comfortable talking outside the office environment. The program serves individuals, couples, families and groups. MFLCs are happy to present on multiple topics, including, facilitating educational groups, attending meetings and installation special events. Each MFLC is at Osan for 60 days and then rotate to a new assignment. However, the services of the program remain the same. All MFLCs are licensed clinical counselors, holding a Master's or doctrine level degree.
