Outdoor Recreation offers summer trips for adventure enthusiasts

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  What do you think about when you hear "white-water rafting?" Have you ever considered rafting down a river as a great stress reliever?

Osan's Outdoor Recreation office offers several trips throughout the summer months that can not only relieve stress but also give someone a chance to get out and experience something different here.

When I was first told about the trip I couldn't help but wonder "what do they mean by white-water rafting?"

I had thoughts of a river with jagged rocks and steep drop offs, and with rough, powerful water that would suck me out of the boat and send me down the river for miles. In this case I think it was fear of the unknown that got the best of me and that wasn't at all what it was like on the rafting trip I took June 18.

At first I thought my rafting skill-level would not meet the challenge, but I now think this time of year is perfect for the beginner to get out and learn some basics -- if you are looking for this kind of experience. The warm weather and lack of rain so far this year have made conditions ideal to enjoy a relaxing day on the river.

I have to say, my first rafting trip was enjoyable. Not only did I get outside and take advantage of a beautiful day but it also gave me the opportunity to let my hair down and have some fun with some coworkers and friends, and it introduced me to some other people around base who have the same thirst for a thrill.

In my opinion the river was probably a Class I or II, and it served as a decent challenge without any extreme hazards. Keeping in mind that It might be completely different after monsoon season or several days of steady rain. So before taking on something you have never done, I would advise asking what the current river conditions are to make sure you aren't taking any unnecessary risk.

The best thing about this trip was I had very little planning to do. Outdoor Recreation provided the transportation and there was a skilled guide who took us down the river, which was included in the fee. The guides spoke enough English to give us all pointers on what we needed to do. The only part I played was pulling my own weight as we paddled.

So for those interested in getting out and seeking something new and exciting, I'd highly recommend calling Outdoor Recreation to see what they have available in the next few months.

These trips tend to fill up quickly but it's a great way to see Korea and soak in some culture during your year here. Get out and explore!
