Members of Team Osan had an opportunity to share in a culturally enriching experience at the Korean American Friendship Festival Sept. 15 and 16.

The ninth annual event highlighted ethnic foods, activities, and entertainment hosted by the Songtan Chamber of Commerce. The festival's slogan was: "We go together" Gatchi Kapshida, and "Be a good neighbor" Choen Eeut Doepshida.

Lt. Gen. Jan-Marc Jouas, 7th Air Force commander, and Pyeongtaek City Mayor Sun-Ki Kim, spoke during a kick-off ceremony at the Songtan International Civic Center just outside one of the base's gates.

"Your commitment to our community is what truly strengthens our relationship," Jouas said. "To all of our neighbors, thank you for your warm hospitality for being such gracious hosts. It is through these events that our sense of a shared neighborhood and community is developed and reinforced. That sense of being one community is critical to our alliance and our personal connections throughout the local area."

This year's event featured American and Korean stage performers, martial arts demonstrations, cultural food and entertainment booths giving both Americans and Koreans a look into the differences of the cultures that share a common bond of friendship.

Staff Sgt. John Andelfinger, 51st Security Forces Squadron, who sang the U.S. National Anthem at the event, believes that music adds to the enjoyment of the festival.

"It's really nice to get out there and have fun with it," he said. "The partnership between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea is the strongest it's ever been, and it's great to go out and enjoy the music and festivities. It also allows Koreans to put a name to a face for those of us they see working at the gate."

The general said events like this act as building blocks between friends.

"It is my hope that we use this wonderful opportunity to build upon our professional and personal ties, all the while gaining an appreciation for our differences and our shared values," said Jouas. "Events like this one truly create an environment that fosters an enduring friendship."
