There hasn't always been a lot of families at Osan, but that is one thing that's quickly changing as Korea becomes the "assignment of choice."

The Osan Parent Network started in 2001 and is affiliated with the 51st Medical Group's Family Advocacy office.

The network provides services for families stationed at Osan, regardless of sponsorship status. Intense mission requirements, as a result of the constant threat of war, leave limited resources available for family needs.

OPN focuses on children age six and under.

According to Anna Daggett, volunteer coordinator for OPN, children in that age group represent the base's "most underserved population."

The network's activities include daily playgroups, arts and crafts, daily stroller walk/runs, a breastfeeding support group, a parenting support group, a communication network, family advocacy, puppet theater, library, monthly swap meets, and maintaining a community garden.

The OPN is not a private organization, has no formal board and they collect no dues.

Simply put, the Osan Parent Network is a group of parents interested in helping one another in day-to-day activities to help their children develop and grow.

The network of parents started a Yahoo! group nearly two years ago which increased connectivity with new parents and further developed the program.

The program has helped bring families together, especially in the summer PCS season, when they typically gain six to eight new members per week--particularly in the playgroup. Off-base participation has also increased, but there is always room for more.
