You may be hearing and seeing some new things around Osan lately. That's because the Culture of Responsible Choices is alive and well.

The CoRC working group is designed to prevent behaviors that impair mission readiness, such as, alcohol misuse, illicit drug use, tobacco use, etc.

This is done primarily by promoting responsible alcohol use; ensuring and providing alternative non-alcohol driven events; encouraging the 0-0-1-3, Wingman and Flight Lead programs; and reinforcing responsible behavior in the Airman culture.

According to Capt. Michael Burkenfi eld, 51st Fighter Wing CoRC action officer, the working group has been very successful in energizing the program here at Osan and coming up with some great initiatives.

Some of these involve just getting the word out to the base. You may have seen some new signs and images around the base already, as well as changes in the messages you see on TV.

You may also see some of the CoRC volunteers greeting you as you leave the base to go out for the night, helping you to have a safe and fun night the responsible way.

But it's not all about messaging. It's about partnering with base agencies to create a responsible environment.  The CoRC partners with many agencies on base to co-sponsor programs to include free outdoor movies, or other initiatives such as free sodas for Flight Leads who aren't drinking.

Other key elements of the program are the 0-0-1-3, Wingman and Flight Lead concepts.
The 0-0-1-3 policy is an Air Force wide program: zero underage drinking, zero DUI's (or other alcohol related incidents), one drink per hour, three drinks per night.

The Wingman program is also Air Force-wide. Everybody should have a Wingman, especially when going off base, or drinking.

The Flight Lead program takes the Wingman program one step further: when you go out as a group, you should assign a Flight Lead.

That person has the plan for the night, and takes control of the group. The Flight Lead agrees to stay sober enough to make responsible decisions, keep the group on-track with the plan, change the plan when necessary, and make the call when it's time to go or when someone in the group is being unsafe or irresponsible.

At Osan, having a Flight Lead for the night is a perfect way to have a successful and fun night.

"It's not about telling people not to drink, imposing someone else's morality on people, or being an alcohol free social-event planning group," said Captain Burkenfield. "It's about making the responsible choices message part of Osan's culture every day. Our goal is to promote responsible choices in line with our core values and Air Force policy."

CoRC events and messages are all geared toward that goal. By networking with the base, sending the right message, and co-sponsoring events, we give all Airmen a great opportunity for success.

If you'd like to be a part of the CoRC working group, or volunteer for any of the many Osan events, contact you unit CoRC representatives, first sergeants, the Airmen and Family Readiness Center, or come to one of the CoRC working group meetings.

The CoRC meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10:30 a.m. in classroom 2 at the McPherson Community Center.
