A-10 Thunderbolt II and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft perform an 'Elephant Walk' on the runway this week during Exercise Beverly Herd 16-01 at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea. The Elephant Walk was a demonstration of U.S. Air Force capabilities and strength and showcases the wing's ability to generate combat airpower in an expedient manner in order to respond to simulated contingency operations. The A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft are from the 25th Fighter Squadron "Draggins" and the F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft are from the 36th Fighter Squadron "Fiends" of the 51st Fighter Wing, Osan AB, ROK; the additional F-16 aircraft are from the 179th Fighter Squadron "Bulldogs" of the 148th Fighter Wing out of Duluth Air National Guard Base, Minnesota. Seventh Air Force Super Squadron

The Seventh Air Force Super Squadron test continues. For more information, read the Seventh Air Force article.

Seventh Air Force’s Super Squadron test is a temporary movement of F-16 aircraft and personnel within the Republic of Korea, from Kunsan Air Base to Osan AB, to test and validate the concept of a “Super Squadron’s” ability to improve sortie generation, training, and readiness while reducing manpower and logistics support requirements – thus optimizing combat capabilities.

The initial year-long test saw initial success, and Seventh Air Force was approved for a second phase by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force on April 7, 2025. In Phase II, which will begin October 2025, a second super squadron of F-16s from Kunsan AB will be established at Osan AB.

Approximately 1,000 Airmen will also transfer from Kunsan to Osan to support the test. The movement of personnel and fighter aircraft is a temporary shift, seeking to optimize capabilities and maximize combat effectiveness. Force generation and re-organization is an Air Force-wide priority meant to streamline critical resources and operations for today’s security environment.
