51st CES, Girl Scouts beautify base

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --  Members of the 51st Civil Engineer Squadron environmental flight and the Osan Girl Scouts teamed up for a day of base beautification to celebrate the 42nd Earth Day April 20.

Approximately 30 Girl Scouts planted more than 200 moss flowers and 10 azalea bushes during the event to add to the beautification of the perimeter around Osan American Elementary School.

Earth Day is a designated day every year where more than 1 billion people in roughly 190 countries come together to beautify the earth by planting new trees, collecting garbage and educating on the importance of maintaining a clean planet.

"The new generation needs to know that the environmental impact is important," said Kun Kwon Song, 51st CES natural resource manager.

The environmental flight spent roughly $800 dollars on plants for the event.

"This is such a great opportunity for the girl scouts," said Renee Kellett, a volunteer with the scouts. "To come out and work as a team really teaches these girls something important."

Throughout the event Kwon expressed the importance of Earth Day and how the scouts could improve our planet every day.
By getting involved, planting trees and taking care of our environment daily, the planet will be healthy for everyone, he said.

It's important to help the environment, said Madeleine Kellett, 10-year-old daughter of Renee.

"Everyone should plant a tree every day," she said.

"It will be great to see what the scouts planted grow throughout our tour here at Osan," said Renee.

Earth Day was officially held worldwide April 22.
