Multicultural committee fosters understanding through awareness Published April 10, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Candy Knight 51st Fighter Wing Public Affairs OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Today's Air Force prides itself on having the best Airmen in the world -- Airmen who come from all walks of life and cultures to create the best air and space force on the planet. Harnessing those differences to foster acceptance, tolerance, understanding and awareness is one of the goals of Osan's first multicultural committee. One of the ways the committee is recognizing the many cultures on Osan is by sponsoring a multicultural fair, scheduled for June 14. The committee is seeking volunteers to participate in the various events and activities being planned for the fair. "It's important to have a multicultural committee established at Osan to recognize the many achievements and contributions of all cultures," said Master Sgt. Chris Moore, 51st Fighter Wing Equal Opportunity Office and committee member. "Special observances are an integral part of the Department of Defense and American society. Recognizing and learning about different cultures helps increase unit effectiveness and cohesion," he added. Although there are many different special observance committees on base, Sergeant Moore stated that it is not the goal of the multicultural committee to eliminate any of the events or contributions other special observance committees provide. "The reason the multicultural committee is sponsoring a fair is so that, just for one day, members of Team Osan can bring all of those contributions and achievements together through an educational method," he said. Individuals interested in becoming a part of the committee or volunteering for the multicultural fair can contact Sergeant Moore at 784-4848.
